This video demonstrates some prototype modules being developed by Phillip Stearns and Pete Edwards for a larger breadboard based modular synth system. The current collection of modules demonstrated here were developed and designed by Phillip Stearns using a stackable, header-based form factor designed by Pete Edwards. Each module features a curated collection of CMOS chips configured into powerful core multipurpose functions. At the heart of the design approach and ethos is the desire for endless musical and electronic invention, exploration, and discovery from the bottom up or the top down.

The current lineup of modules includes:
The Shifter: A complex signal generator that utilizes an 8-bit linear feedback shift register.
Divide by 2 by 2 by 2 by 2…: a frequency divider that produces 12 sub octaves with three programmable 1 of 8 outputs.
Divide by 3 - 10: A frequency divider that produces subharmonics
The Digitizer: A real-time 3-bit ADC
The Rhythm Brain: Three synchronized, independently programmable binary rate multipliers.

Video Process: Several dozens of clips were edited from the original material supplied by Stine Marie Jacobsen, and imported into AVIdemux, a utility which allows for the surgical removal of “key frames”. The resulting datamoshed clips were then recut, and remoshed into longer passages. The kaleidoscopic effects were obtained by mirroring and rotating a single clip using transparent blend modes between multiple layers. The final passages were then composited in post production using multiple layers, blend modes, and various fades between, following the music to varying degrees.

Audio Process: A few clips were extracted from the music composed by Nis Bysted, which were then stretched on by factors of 25 50 and 100 times their original length and heavily filtered to remove high frequency artifacts. Some clips were reversed prior to their being stretched. Other clips were pitch shifted after being stretched. The entire composition, once completed was then reversed during the final editing of the video.

He also pours various household chemicals (like bleach) onto the prints to make the colors and corrosion you see. The process is about as beautiful as the end result. You can watch how it’s done here.

We asked Phillip a few questions about his process:

What inspired you to apply electricity to film as opposed to just chemicals?

My explorations were guided most by what materials I had available. A big batch of this instant color film was being thrown out, presumably by a photographer in my building transitioning out of analog film. Two years ago, I received a batch of neon tubes and high voltage ballasts to drive them. After tinkering with interrupting the process of developing the film (after exposing to light) and discovering the painterly qualities such physical manipulations produced, I started to think about how else I work with the film.

Through experimenting with digital cameras a couple of years prior to these experiments in film, I became aware of Hiroshi Suigimoto’s work of subjecting photopaper to electric discharges and thought that I could try something similar with the neon ballasts and the color film itself.

How did you go about making sure your process was actually safe to do?

I caution, again, this is not safe. No one should try this on their own, unless assisted by a qualified electrician trained in dealing with high voltages, and a physician. Death by electrocution is quite real.

Any other tips or comments you have for photographers who want to explore analog or digital experiments?

Look at what you have around you. Use it differently. Look for potentials that exist just beyond, hidden within the normally prescribed perception of things. Play, but be smart about it. Be safe.
